Due to the popularity of the Frame House, an extra wing was constructed recently. The Sunroom sits at right angles to the Frame House. It is used simply as an extension of the restaurant but can be booked separately. This would be an ideal venue for a big family lunch celebration because it is separate from the main restaurant so parents don’t have to worry about noise levels as their children enjoy playing with each other inside the venue which offers a spectacular 360˚view of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, or outside on the lawns right in front of the Sunroom, so in plain sight. So, whatever the weather, the Sunroom at Bosman Hermanus is perfect for get-togethers with children.

Family outings with children often include elderly grandparents and here Bosman Hermanus is ideal. There is Disabled Parking right behind the venue for those who are unable to walk down the path from the parking area, there is a ramp for wheelchairs, a disabled toilet and no steps inside the Frame House. There is a great selection of Cape Botanicals non-alcoholic sparkling drinks for designated drivers or those who prefer not to drink wine. The food menu clearly states which dishes are gluten-free or vegan to address dietary requirements, and the coffee served at this establishment is legendary. Watson is our chief barista and has been at the Frame House since it opened in 2017 so often parents with kids just pop up to the Frame House in the week to give their children a chance to stretch their legs and for the adults just to catch up over coffee. These days coffees are accompanied by a delicious crunchy chocolate biscuit which adds just the right level of sweetness and decadence to a freshly made, steaming cup of coffee.

One more thing: the Bosman Hermanus farm was acquired by the Bosman Family in 2000 so that this Wellington wine producer could grow cool climate cultivars like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. However, only a sixth of the farm is taken up by vineyards, the rest is under conservation management, and a small portion has been set aside to grow fynbos species commercially. As you walk up to the Frame House, you will notice the Flower Hut on the left where you can purchase bunches of these beautiful, indigenous flowers. Availability and choice depend on the season, but there are usually proteas and/or pincushions complemented by indigenous foliage. Grabbing a bunch to take home after a great day keeps the memory going at home long after and provides the perfect opportunity to teach children the value of conservation and the importance of biodiversity.

However, Bosman Family Vineyards is arguably best known for their single vineyards wines, the iconic Optenhorst Chenin Blanc perhaps being the most famous. The distance from Cape Town to Hermanus is a mere 123km and will take a scenic hour and 45 minutes by car. So, it’s doable for a day trip, but as there is so much to see and do there, it’s best to take a weekend or even a week!

The quickest route is along the N2 over Sir Lowry’s Pass, but you could always opt for the scenic route which takes you along the R44 past Gordon’s Bay, Pringle Bay and Betty’s Bay. This is a good route to take in whale season as you will probably spot some whales breaching on your journey around the coast. More about the whales further on…

But there’s also lots to see and do on the quick route. As you climb up Sir Lowry’s Pass, you can enjoy a spectacular view of False Bay stretching all the way to Table Mountain in the distance. Once over the Pass, there are two farmstalls worth a stop. Firstly, at the turnoff to Grabouw you’ll find Peregrine Farm Stall. It’s been there for at least 50 years and sells delicious pies, freshly baked breads, farm produce, wine and loads more. There’s also a play area for kids needing to get rid of some energy, a lovely nursery selling plants (which could be a great gift for someone you are visiting). Their coffee is delicious, but in winter I prefer to order Milo, not often on the menu these days.

After a picturesque drive with apple orchards on each side of the road and border fences dripping with Old Cape Roses, another farm stall looms. The Houw Hoek Hotel is the oldest licensed hotel in South Africa, built in 1779. It’s a great place for lunch or a quiet drink, and please do pay homage to the gigantic Blue Gum Tree at the entrance, said to be one of the oldest and tallest in the country. But if you just want a short pitstop, then stop in at the Houw Hoek Farmstall across the road. The jury is still out on who makes the best pies, Houw Hoek or Peregrine, but both bakeries offer delicious breads, tarts and quiches along with the usual fresh produce, jams and locally made craftwork.

If the queues were too long at either, there is an Ou Meul Bakery at Salandra Park on the R43 quite soon after the Hermanus turnoff on the N2. The usual fair is available, but their added extra is freshly ‘braai-ed’ ‘roosterkoek’, which is bread rolls baked on the coals. They are delicious and can be filled with eggs and bacon, cheese and jam or even a meat patty and trimmings for a delicious hamburger. Best to phone ahead and order the ‘roosterkoek’ to avoid disappointment, 

The entrance into Hermanus is slow but beautiful. Soon after Ou Meul you will travel over the lagoon at the mouth of the Bot River, then through the villages of Fisherhaven, Hawston, Vermont and Onrus with the sea unfolding on your right, and the Kleinriver Mountain range rising on the left.

As you enter Hermanus, you will travel on the main road towards the Old Harbour and then veer left which will take you through the pretty town dotted with quaint shops, fabulous hotels and delightful eateries. You may like to stay in the town centre, and there are lovely options, or you might like to travel further on towards Voelklip where the beaches are located. 

Cape Town International Airport to Hermanus

The road trip from Cape Town airport to Hermanus is even shorter from the airport at only 109km and taking about an hour and a half by car. So, if you’re flying in from somewhere else, you’ll be able to go straight to Hermanus from the airport. There are shuttles that ferry visitors from the airport to Hermanus and back again for a reasonable fee.

Is there a bus from Cape Town to Hermanus

Unfortunately, there is no direct bus to Hermanus from Cape Town but, as previously mentioned, shuttles from the airport are readily available. Some of the guest houses in Hermanus would be able to organise a shuttle service for you upon enquiry.

Is there a train from Cape Town to Hermanus?

The short answer is NO, there is no train to Hermanus, but the long answer is quite an interesting one. William Hoy was the General Manager of the Cape Government Railways. He and his family holidayed regularly in Hermanus, always staying at the Marine Hotel. He was knighted after the First World War for his work in constructing a railway in record time to German South West Africa as manager of South African Railways. He was known as a pioneer for tourism, and helped establish the Kruger Park as a tourist destination. However, he was also instrumental in prohibiting the sleepy little village of Hermanus from becoming a tourist hub by refusing the extend the railway line from Bot River to the village. Sir Hoy was an avid fisherman and eventually retired to Hermanus, so perhaps he was just safeguarding his own peace and quiet. He and his wife are buried on Hoy’s Koppie, just behind the United Church near Lord Roberts Drive.

What is there to do in Hermanus?

There is so much to do in Hermanus, you had better plan to stay for a few days. You can eat a delicious meal at a different restaurant every day of the week. There are several beaches to choose from whether you are a surfer, a sunbather or a family in search of a picnic spot and a safe swim. The Fernkloof Nature Reserve offers several different hikes in the Kleinriver Mountains. You can spend a breathless hour trudging up and down Lemoenkop, or a whole day walking along beautiful paths past waterfalls and spectacular views.

The whales come into Walker Bay to calve from July to November. So if you if your trip falls within this time period, make sure you plan sometime to walk along the cliff path and sit on one of the benches with your binoculars at hand. It is a wonderful sight to see whales breaching out of the ocean. The more adventurous can also buy a ticket for a boat trip which takes you even closer to these huge and majestic mammals.

And then of course, there is the Hemel-en-Aarde Wine Valley. Just a short 15-minute drive from Hermanus, there are several award winning wineries that offer an array of excellent wines. Close to the sea, and in an elevated position in the mountains, this is an area for cool climate wines.

The Frame House cheese platter is an excellent accompaniment to your wine tasting and can be shared amongst guests. There are a few small plates on offer, but the Bosman-by-the-Sea Pairing Menu is a must for the serious wine lover. Hermanus is a quaint little seaside town around 150km east of Cape Town, about an hour and 30 minutes’ drive. With a range of beaches to choose from, plenty of trails to walk and wander, wine farms to visit, whales to spot, and lovely restaurants to try, this is the perfect spot for a lovely holiday where you can choose your pace.

Although Hermanus is primarily a seaside destination, there is something for everyone to do year-round. Warm weather from October through to April attracts holidaymakers who spend many happy hours on the beaches, splashing in the waves and exploring the rock pools, while braver folk catch the larger waves further out, go paddle boarding or kayaking. The many hiking trails in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve and the scenic cliff path along the coast are perhaps an alternative for cooler weather, and whale watching is a pleasant pastime from July to November when the Southern Right whales venture there to calve.

SELF-CATERING ACCOMODATION IN HERMANUS

With its proximity to Cape Town and the inland towns, many locals own holiday homes in Hermanus. These are often rented out as self-catering accommodation for tourists. Many of these houses have spectacular sea views and most are usually located within walking distance from the beaches so they are ideal for those seeking an easy, no-fuss holiday. These holiday homes are located along a thin strip of coastline wedged between the Klein River Mountains and the sea, so roads are quiet and nothing is further than a short stroll away. Each beach offers something different: Grotto Beach is the largest and a blue flag beach. Walk all the way to the lagoon or simple laze on the white sand. Further towards town is the grassed Voëlklip beach, next is Kammabaai which is ideal for children, and the last beach before the rock pools is Langbaai, which is actually the shortest beach.

Within the town centre there are also many apartments to choose from that are close to attractions such as the Old Harbour, the museum, a myriad of cool coffee shops and some lovely restaurants, with great views of the bay. There are also well-stocked grocery stores so no need to shop beforehand. 

Arguably the best accommodation in Hermanus is at either the Birkenhead or Marine Hotels. Each located in prime positions right on the sea, guests can enjoy their breakfast while whale watching or enjoy cocktails on the terrace while watching the sun sink into the sea. Luxury accommodation in Hermanus can also be found in a few smaller boutique hotels and guest houses that offer personalised, tailor-made services to the discerning traveller.Suitable accommodation near Hermanus can be found in the neighbouring villages of Onrus, Vermont and Stanford, while the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley nearby boasts a number of wine farms where guest accommodation is available. In this pristine valley, instead of sea views, visitors can enjoy spectacular mountain views and enjoy walking through the indigenous ‘fynbos’ plant kingdom. There are several wine farms producing excellent cool climate wines. 

Bosman Hermanus is a WWF Conservation Champion so a visit there is a must. The Frame House offers an impressive range of wines to taste matched with small plates of locally sourced food with a spectacular view of fynbos, vineyards and the towering Babylonstoren Mountain. Children are welcome here and can stretch their legs on the jungle gym while their parents taste wine or enjoy a game of boules. 

The farm also offers accommodation, the Bosman Hermanus Farm Stay. This two-bedroomed cottage is perfect for a family: There is one double room and another with twin beds, a bathroom, a lovely open plan kitchen/living area with an enclosed veranda offering jaw-dropping views of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. It’s a 5-minute walk to the Frame House for a light lunch, there is a short hiking trail for the more energetic, and the beaches are just a short drive away.

Other wineries to consider are Creation, Bouchard Finlayson, La Vierge and Hamilton Russell to name but a few. Choose accommodation from several ‘farm stay’ options, mountain chalets and more exclusive serviced cottages. For those staying in Hermanus who don’t want to ‘drink and drive’ there is a great alternative: The hop-on-hop-off wine safari takes tourists to the various wineries making your trip easy and stress-free.  

This wine region is known mostly for their Pinot Noirs, a tricky grape that thrives in this cooler climate, while several highly rated Sauvignon Blancs and Chardonnays are also on offer.

CHEAP ACCOMMODATION IN HERMANUS

For those on a tight budget, there is backpack-type accommodation in the town, as well as reasonably priced studio apartments and rooms to rent. There is so much to do in and around Hermanus that you will spend most of your time out and about.

While Christmas and Easter are high season in Hermanus, there are often ‘specials’ offered in off-peak times or as a last-minute deal. Contact the Hermanus Tourism Bureau or visit local holiday booking websites for great deals.

WHEN TO GO TO HERMANUS

There is always something to do in Hermanus, even if it is too cold for the beach. There are a number of festivals held throughout the year from the Fynarts Festival in June, the Kalfie Fees in August and the Whale Festival in September. Each festival caters for a different sector of the market but they are all well-run and well-supported.

The Fynarts Festival celebrates art in all its forms from music to theatre, drama, dance, food and wine.

The Kalfiefees is similar but focusses particularly on Afrikaans culture with local bands performing, book launches, workshops and art and lifestyle events.

The Whale Festival celebrates the Southern Right whales who come to calve in Walker Bay each year. While there are always several environmental exhibitions and talks, this is more of a fun festival with beer tents, live music, a street parade and a fun run.

But the best time to see whales in Hermanus is not necessarily during the Whale Festival, they can be spotted from the shore between July and November and there are a number of whale watching tour operators that take tourists out into the bay for a closer look. These boats leave from the New Harbour which is also a good place to stop for a while, look at the fishing vessels and walk along the pier.

Hermanus is also a haven for artists and there are a number of galleries, both in the town itself, and in the villages nearby, that exhibit their work. Often on a Friday evening the galleries will stay open later and offer a glass of wine to art lovers wanting to enjoy the artwork.

IS IT SAFE TO WALK AROUND HERMANUS AT NIGHT?

There are a number of pubs and clubs in the centre of Hermanus where both young and old gather for a whole lot of fun. Please note it is not safe to walk around Hermanus alone at night. Rather walk in a group and keep your bags safe and closed. It is also not recommended to walk the cliff path after dark.

There are a number of lovely restaurants situated near the Old Harbour that offer anything from seafood to a great steak, while The Rock at the New Harbour is well-known for their seafood and excellent sushi. Hame is a little restaurant located in an historic fisherman’s cottage in town. Chef and owner Emilia Knight cooks up delicious meals often with a Scottish twist. She also hosts an occasional whisky tasting which is really popular. 

Hermanus is great for a weekend getaway but to fully unwind and appreciate all this beautiful corner of the world has to offer, rather book a longer holiday. There is so much to do in Hermanus, but to simply relaxed and breath in the renowned ‘champagne’ air is therapeutic in itself. 

So pick a place to stay, pack your bags and head out. You won’t be disappointed!
